This Is Power
I am sitting here, it is a warm, sunny early evening in Copenhagen, and the room is quiet except for a bee who tried to invade through the window, and the gentle hum of my iMac, on which I am reading a web article.
Suddenly my attention is caught by the pretty orange plastic cube in front of me, which I like so much. It did not cost much, but still it is way faster than my older mac, and incomparably faster than the old powerbook I bought used. So until I get the record-breaking new top-model powerbook I ordered, this one is quite enough to handle anything I want to do.
And I suddenly realize with subjective understanding: This is Power!
With this little, cute, inexpensive box, I can create art. I can write novels. I can search millions of hard disks all over the globe. Get news world-wide practically in real time. Write my own news or opinions, and publish them to the whole world in two minutes. Communicate with friends (or even enemies) in seconds, also globally.
I can, and I do, create my own writings and pictures, and make my own "publications", and get them to the people practically for free, even making money of it. I tried that before the net and good pc's, lord was that a rocky ride.
I am sitting here in my own little home, with my own little plastic box, and ruling a kingdom.
And the only thing that determines my success is myself, and how hard I work.
Barriers are down. Gone are the days where a Rockecenter will dominate and squeeze all competition out of existence because they need his rail road for business. (And don't talk to me about Microsnuff, just wait five years, or maybe only three.)
Lord knows mankind is far from perfect yet, he will still revert to violence too easily, and he will still listen to lies for too long. But with communications instruments so cheap and powerful, progress is made exponentially faster than anywhen else in history, and only the stars set the limit. And maybe not even them.
Power. Splurge on it. It's fun.
