Apple, the feminine computer producer

    by Eolake Stobblehouse

Meet my friends, the Svensons. Who are they? Well, Mr. Svenson is a big, strong man. He earns quite a pretty penny as a senior engineer, and has a huge house in the hills. And Mrs. Svenson is a very pretty woman, she is a good conversationalist, and bakes fabulous brownies.

Some people don't understand why I have bought a G4 Cube. And other people are very envious. When I talk to a geek, he is very uncomprehending. "But why? I just don't get it! What is its processor speed?"

I say: "500 MHz."

"500 MHz?!! What is this, the stone age?"

I say: "But it is quality MHz. Also, it looks great, and is very small."

The words 'looks great' do not even register. 'Small' does, vaguely. "Small," he says. "Is it a laptop?"

The thing is, unless he can take it around to show off, he likes a big machine. A powerful machine.

Me, I like a nice machine.

'Nice'??? What are you on?

Men are judged by, and judge by, numbers. Quantity. How big or how small is something. How big is your wang and your biceps. How high can you piss?

Women are judged by, and judge by, quality. Aesthetics*. How nice is something or somebody. How does it look, how does it feel.

Men and geeks like power and bulk. And if it is difficult to use, that is a definite bonus. That gives you something to fight.

Women, artists, philosophers, and other higher-level creatures like things that are nice, and don't cause problems.

Apple is the female computer company. The Cube and the iMac is not designed to look big, bulky, and difficult. They are designed to be nice. And they are. They are also quite powerful, but they did not have to be. Today's computer speeds are nearing levels where unless you are working on very very big files professionally, it does not matter one bit whether you are using this year's computer or last year's.

Some people will no doubt misunderstand me and think I am talking about superficial qualities when I say 'nice'. Nothing could be further from the truth. Apple's machines are nice to the core. Good quality. And their software too. When OS X is properly implemented, along with the major programs to run, it will be unbeatable.

Power is used to fight. When you rise above that level spiritually, you get higher and better priorities.
